Lazio Trekking: Tivoli on the water route – April 16th
A fixed date trekking trip to Tivoli, the city of water. Three days of guided excursions passing between the UNESCO heritage villas and the Monte Catillo nature reserve. The proposal includes a small group of at least 4 participants, to treat yourself to a weekend of light trekking to discover the nature and history of the Lazio town. The leitmotif of the history of Tivoli and its surroundings is undoubtedly the water of the Aniene river, which allowed the city to prosper over the centuries. One of the excursions concerns the ruins of the Roman aqueduct. The trek will follow the water route from Tivoli to San Vittorino where it will be possible to visit the Sanctuary “Our Lady of Fatima”. The trek begins with a visit to Villa Adriana, the home of the Emperor Hadrian and today a US Heritage Site. The history of ancient Rome still shines within the walls of the villa, the emperor resided there in the distant 117 AD, near a source of sulphurous water appreciated by Hadrian himself. Although the villa was built according to the dictates of the time, it remains an original project in its construction. With its 1320 hectares, the nature reserve extends over the mountains of Tivoli, a must for a walking itinerary. During the walk it will be possible to admire panoramic views and the richness of the local vegetation, in particular, thanks to its position, in the reserve there are many plant species thanks to the meeting between the so-called “western” and “thermophilic” species. proposal you will be accompanied along “the way of the Wolves”, where it is possible to admire some specimens of rare pseudo cork oak. Unmissable:
Among the curiosities kept in the Lazio town we remember the ancient bridge of San Rocco, an ancient way to reach the town, today few remains remain. Or and doors that testify to the presence of the Jewish ghetto up to the sixteenth century. Finally, the frescoes that according to legend refer to Templar knights and would testify to their encounters in the deconsecrated church of Santo Stefani ai Ferri.
